Cartographer of the Unknown
This series of mixed media prints explore the idea of the unknown.
As an artist in residence with Schmidt Ocean Institute, I had the experience of mapping a previously unmapped area of the seafloor. On a research vessel in the Pacific Ocean I took part in uncovering depths off the coast of California and Oregon above the seeping Cascadia Margin. These works include cyanotype of images taken on the ship, data from the bathymetry I was exposed to, along with intuitive drawings, paintings, and screen prints on top. As I parallel the ideas of the unknown mysteries of our seafloor with the human experience - I begin to find parallels to the process of map making. Cartography of the unknown is a deeper psychological exploration of the human experience. As I layer imagery, I continue to contemplate memory, experience and emotion submerged beyond the depths of consciousness.
